nervous shock

A recognizable psychiatric illness caused by shock, as distinct from normal grief, sorrow, or anxiety. Damages cannot be obtained for grief, sorrow, or anxiety alone, but shock that produces an illness is an actionable injury. The test of liability for shock is whether or not the illness produced by the shock was reasonably foreseeable.
