motion

An application made orally and in open court to a judge for an order, most commonly an interlocutory *injunction. Motions may be interlocutory (i.e. relating to some pre-trial matter in proceedings begun by some other form of originating *process) or originating. In both cases the applicant must normally serve a notice of motion on his opponent, warning him of his intention to move the court, but some motions can be brought *ex parte.
