harmonization of laws

The process by which member states of the EEC make changes in their national laws, in accordance with *Community legislation, to produce uniformity, particularly relating to commercial matters of common interest. The Council of Ministers of the European Communities has, for example, issued directives on the harmonization of company law and of units of measurement. Compare *approximation of laws.
