guardian

One who looks after the interests of a minor and is entitled to exercise parental rights and duties over it. The parents of a child are its natural guardians, and they may appoint guardians to look after the child after they die. At present the appointment may only be made by deed or will, but when the Children Act 1989 comes into force the appointment can be made merely in writing, signed and dated.
